The first Gatling gun was a crank-operated, multi-barrel, machine gun driven by hand. It is a six-barreled weapon capable of firing 200 rounds per minute. It was invented by Doctor Richard Gatling in 1861 and patented the Gatling Gun in 1862. It was used in the Union forces during the American Civil War in the 1860s and believed it would end the war due to its great damage to opponent. Then it was used in the assault on San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War.
In 1884, Gatling gun was revised and made a first true fully automatic weapon, making use of the fired projectile's recoil force to reload the weapon. It was then that Gatling gun represented a huge leap in firearm technology.
After 1910 Gatling gun was declared as obsolete by the US Army and resurfaced again after World War II with the M61 Vulcan model, a hydraulically or pneumatically driven, six-barreled, air-cooled, electrically fired Gatling-style rotary cannon which fires 20 mm rounds at an extremely high rate, and has been used by the United States military on fixed-wing aircraft.
