UAV NASA Helios, a solar-powered, has made this flight in almost a hundred years after the Wright Brothers' historic flight on Dec. 17, 1903. Remotely piloted Helios is traveling at about 25 miles per hour or 40 km/h at 10,000 feet that is about 3 km in the sky to the north-west of Hawaii in August 2001.
Essentially an ultralight flying wing with 14 electric motors, was built by AeroVironment. Covered with solar cells impressive Helios wing length 247 feet (75 meters) greater than the wingspan and even full length of a Boeing 747 airliner. Climbing during daylight hours, the prototype aircraft reached an altitude just short of 100,000 feet (30 km), breaking records for no rocket engines.
Helios is designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the technology, but its flight to the extremely thin air at an altitude of 100,000 feet above the Earth's surface can also reproduce the conditions of flight with the wings in the atmosphere of Mars.
