8.0 magnitude earthquake hit Iran

A strong 8.0 magnitude earthquake has struck Iran close to the border with Pakistan.

Tremors have been felt across the Gulf region and in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In the Indian capital, New Delhi, buildings shook for close to a minute.

This is the second quake to strike Iran in the last seven days.

Hundreds of people are feared dead after a powerful quake.

Iran's Press TV reports that at least 40 people have been confirmed dead due to the quake.

"It was the biggest earthquake in Iran in 40 years and we are expecting hundreds of dead," an Iranian official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

People reported feeling a slight tremor in Afghanistan's Kandahar and Pakistan’s Karachi, both cities located hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter.

On the Pakistani side of the border at least five people have been reported killed in the disaster.
